I Got It From My Mama

Good morning and happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I, myself, am not a mother. But I do have an incredible mom who has helped me become the person I am today. In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to take some time to share with you the top 5 mental strengths that I learned from my mom that I use not only in my practice, but in my daily life.

  1. Resiliency: “If plan A doesn’t work, there are 25 more letters!” Time and time again I have failed at something I’ve tried to do, and time and time again my mom has encouraged me to get back up and try again. She has shown me that “failure” is not an option, and there is always a plan B (or C, or D, or E…)

  2. Reframing: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” Throughout my life, I’ve seen my mom be placed in situations that are less than ideal. But what I haven’t seen is a lack of positivity. My mom always finds a way to make a positive out of a negative, seeing the glass (of lemonade) as half full.

  3. Consistency: “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, it’s what we do consistently”  For as long as I can remember, my mom would wake up every single morning and go swim a mile. She rarely missed a day, unless she was sick (*BONUS* my mom taught me that listening to your body is key to being healthy!), and made no excuses. She taught me that my daily consistent actions will be the only thing that brings me closer to success.

  4. Curiosity: “Curiosity is the engine of achievement”  My mom loves to learn. She always wants to know why, or how, or what. Whether she’s learning about other cultures, learning about the history of why things were created (she just sent me an email the other day about the history of English Muffins..), or learning about random trivia questions, she’s always wanting to know more.

  5. Life’s short, eat the ice cream: “no diet is a good diet if it doesn’t allow for ice cream” ‘Nuff said.

Of course, I could go on for hours about the mental strengths I’ve learned from my mom. However, I’d rather go celebrate this day with her. Spend some time loving your mom today-either in person or on zoom! And thank her for the mental strengths she’s taught you.
